![]() ![]() ![]() Spots are a dominant trait, and are controlled by a single gene, the expression of which is controlled by temperature. The spot (or spots) on the lower lip of the flower is formed by anthocyanin pigments. See E-Flora BC for a full list of Mimulus species found in BC. Many other monkey-flower species are found in BC, some on the Central Coast and some not. It is found in alpine and subalpine habitats, and is less common. Viva is a single variety with yellow flowers marked with bright red. The blossoms are often spotted and multicolored and the overall appearance resembles a monkey’s face. The 1 inch (4 cm.) flowers have an upper petal with two lobes and a lower petal with three lobes. Malibu is another mixture in shades of red, yellow, and orange. Monkey flowers ( Mimulus ringens) are native North American wildflowers that thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. Mountain monkey-flower ( Mimulus tilingii) is shorter (5-20 cm), but with flowers equal in size to those of yellow monkey-flower. Monkey flower related varieties: Calypso is a mixture of many colors of 2-inch flowers, both solids and marked bicolors. Its range stretches across much of the western half of North America, as well as some areas of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and the northeastern United States ( see range map). Habitats including seepage sites, streambanks, spray zones, ditches, clearings, wet rocky ledges, crevices, gravel bars, and rock faces. Yellow monkey-flower grows in wet, open locations from low to high elevations. Upper leaves clasp the stem, and lower leaves are stalked. The whole plant can grow up to 20 inches tall. Multiple stalks grow from the plant, and each stalk develops a single flower. Monkey orchids emerge from an underground rhizome. The leaves are paired, oval, and toothed. The flower’s lip is light-colored and set inside the large sepals. The lower lip bears either one large dark reddish spot or several small spots. The large (2-4 cm long) yellow flowers are trumpet-shaped and composed of two lips. It has leafy stems that grow upright or trail along the ground stems can be branched or unbranched, and are usually hairless. The biggest pest of the yellow monkey flower is the snail, here in particular the nudibranch. ![]() Yellow monkey-flower grows as an annual from roots, or as a perennial from creeping stolons, and is 10-80 cm tall. The yellow monkey flower is a thoroughly healthy flower. ![]()
